What a truly terrible experience , I'm so glad the the woman was alright , it's so disturbing to know that there are a lot of insane people out there , and that innocent bystanders get hurt.

The best we can do is stay alert at all times and be ready to react when the unthinkable happens. Your greatest enemy in situations like these other than the assailants is panic because it will debilitate you from doing the things you must do.

Actually, the lesson I'd draw from this is how ordinary people, just Doing The Right Thing, can achieve good results. Because four men jumped up and restrained the attacker "without hesitation", someone who was clearly a danger to others got into the hands of the police, where he needed to be. The police can't be everywhere, but if enough people are willing & able to be alert and react to situations like this, they won't necessarily need to be. Everyone doing their own part, in a small way... it's kind of like open-source policing! Not that the police can be replaced -- but some of what they do can be done in a distributed fashion by ordinary citizens, as well.

Still, it sounds like a not-very-fun experience. I'm glad everyone was OK, and that the attacker will be off the streets for a while, at least.

"Remember, boys and girls (especially the girls). Make sure that when riding a bus, you sit as close to the front as possible. It’s far safer and gives you more protection against the hidden terrors that lurk in the shadows of the back of the bus."

Or if your a big burly bloke, sit there so others don't have to.
